Ucanrentbooks.com is an online book renting website for college students to save a few extra bucks. Instead of buying books from local bookstores or depositing membership fee in college libraries, college students can easily rent their college books online via Ucanrentbooks at up to 80% off from MRP with free delivery and pick-up services. The website also rents textbooks of every course and university.
The story of Ucanrentbooks started from regular college days. In his last semester, Sumit Kumar came to know about the concept of book renting as his friends were renting books from local bookstores which proved to be pretty expensive. He did some research about the business scope and hindrances involved in launching an online portal for renting books and how it can provide the best discount offers in the market. Upon completion of his graduation, he launched the website with his friend.
The team has faced its biggest hurdle in terms of capital. It is an expensive business and they need revenue to boost their services and increase their inventory. “The hardest part of the job is sitting most of time on laptop. I love my job without any doubt, but sometimes I have to spend more than 16 hours on my laptop every day doing all the work.” added Sumit.
In the starting of the venture they decided to rent only BBA books of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University at 60% off but not even a single student rented any book from them. Then they went on with renting textbook of every college at 60% off, but that plan didn’t work either. So they came up with the 80% off discount plan on MRP and it clicked!
The platform has been receiving a good number of orders and has garnered praise for the idea and its appropriate execution. Their biggest competitors are college libraries and local book stores. Though there are other book renting websites like bookelivery.in, Sumit believes they have a limited audience and have low discount rates. Also there are other juggernauts like Flipkart, BooKadda, Snapdeal, Amazon, Infibeam, uRead in the marketplace.
Ucanrentbooks will soon introduce its e-commerce store which will display the products with an add to cart feature. As of now they are taking orders through an order form. They are also creating a mobile app for students to order books from their Smartphones and track their order. They are also planning to rent school books to increase their reach and growth.
“Don’t give the customer what you have, give them whatever they want in the way they want. Learn from your mistakes, keep moving forward and never put profit before customer satisfaction.” is Sumit’s advice to budding entrepreneurs out there! 🙂
