A man known for his formidable personality and never-say-die attitude, Narendra Modi is often called the ‘Dabanngg’ of Indian politics. There are some who revere him and are his staunch followers while the others call him a ‘Hindu fanatic’ and detest his approach towards politics. You might love or hate him, but you can’t refute the fact that you can’t ignore him. Even his opponents have appreciated his insightful thoughts on sensitive issues which have helped Modi to create an image of a no-nonsense man. The strongest politician of BJP Narendra Modi is admired for his extraordinary leadership skills around the world. What makes him different from other politicians? Why is he called a perfect blend of an astute politician and a shrewd businessman?

Let’s have a look at some qualities entrepreneurs can learn from Mr. Modi:

1. Being an ardent communicator always helps!

The moment he walks up the stage and expresses his opinions, you can feel a sudden burst of energy in your body. The way he addresses the audience, his austere expressions and his focus on only relevant information makes him one of the best political speakers in the nation. Many TV channels are conducting debates on topics like Narendra Modi vs Rahul Gandhi and it is often seen that Modi’s communication strategies often supersedes Mr. Gandhi’s emotional speeches.

Yes, being a great communicator isn’t mandatory for a startup but it does help at some point of time. You may argue that you are a techie and so your focus should be mostly on coding and programming but there might be a point in your startup journey when you’ll have to convince investors and prove your worth to them. A good, persuasive communication also helps in motivating the team and articulating your expectations with clarity. So the next time you think communication isn’t an imperative part of a startup, do remember Mr. Modi’s words, “Words can inspire. And words can destroy. Choose yours well.”

2. Get updated!

Being a technologically naive person won’t take you anywhere. By this statement I don’t mean you should start developing softwares and multiple lines of codes but you should rather be aware of the tools that can help you to reach out to your audience in a smarterway.

In the year 2007, Narendra Modi had a YouTube channel and he has been always active on Google+ hangouts and Twitter. During the inauguration of 101 year old NM Wadia Amphitheatre at Fergusson College, Modi said, “Before coming to Pune I had asked through my Facebook page as what should I speak on and I received over-whelming responses. I prepared my today’s speech after studying the reactions of over 2,500 youths from this country. The youths of this country spread across length and breadth, are concerned with the happenings in the country.”

3. Set a good example

If you work with half-hearted efforts, what more can you expect from those who look up to you for an inspiration? It is your startup and just like a good leader, you must have an unwavering enthusiasm to overcome all insecurities, urges to procrastinate and make a firm decision.

The charismatic leader advocates the belief of doing something rather than becoming something. It is believed he himself sometimes conducts surprise checks on people suspected of bribery or inefficiency.

Modi is known for leading a simple lifestyle which has helped him become familiar with prevalent problems faced by common people. He is considered to be a workaholic and hasn’t taken a day off from his office for the last 10 years. A leader should let his work speak for itself. Apart from honesty, dedication and self-confidence, a leader must also strive his best to propagate a healthy learning environment.

4. Be confident and don’t be afraid to show it!

Despite of numerous allegations of practicing communal politics, Narendra Modi has managed to sell his ideas to the masses and the classes. Despite of criticism, he did not hesitate in ordering the demolition of many Hindu temples that were built without proper government sanction. He is one of the most controversial politicians yet according to a recent survey of 100 chief executives conducted by Nielsen for The Economic Times, 80 percent want Modi to become the prime minister.

In your startup journey, you may come across various circumstances that will just make things much more intricate for you. This is the time when you must buck up, embrace your fears and stand for what you feel is right over what is ‘considered’ to be right.

5. Hardships never last long

Narendra Modi was born in an OBC family of grocers in Vadnagar of Gujarat and ran away from home after completing his school education. After returning back, Modi ran a tea stall with his brother at the State Transport Office in Ahmedabad and sold tea for many years. However, he did not lose hope and went on to complete his Master’s degree in Political Science. He has also done a three-month course in US on public relations and image management.

His life story teaches us that there will be times where things will seem gloomy and in such moments we should have faith in our motives and keep moving forward. After winning the elections in Gujarat for the third consecutive time, Modi tweeted. “No need of looking behind…FORWARD…we want infinite energy, infinite courage, infinite patience.”

Even if you are not a great fan of Mr. Modi, you can certainly imbibe some of his qualities in your daily life. What other qualities do you think we learn from this charismatic leader? We would love to read your views!
