Tell us a bit about your background and the path that ultimately led you towards Sosio.

Saket Bhushan

I was an engineering graduate with decent research work in my undergraduate days, and had plans for going for my Masters, but in the 8th semester, I met with an accident, and had to sleep in my hostel room for most of the time. Out of boredom I started making Facebook apps for fun and my friends started using them. Coding a real life app felt much more interesting than optimizing algorithms.

So I decided to chuck Masters, and worked hard for one and a half years at two different startups to get the feel of creating and managing a software company. With some decent experience, I bootstrapped a startup, the first one was a C2C which started from a personal pain point, gradually pivoted to a domain where I had identified the gap, and built the application using the lean methodology.

The first prototype was built in 7 days however it took around 30 days to get it meet customer requirement.

How does it differentiate from other such community management softwares?

Just Google around and you will find how close we are at building a community management software.

What is the biggest hurdle you have faced or are still facing?

Doing everything alone, wearing the hats of system administrator, front end designer, sales, marketing, tech all at the same time.

What is one mistake you’ve made, and what did you learn from it?

Mistake – Trying to perfect the product in the initial stages.

Learning – It was a waste of time, for me.

Having said that, you need to identify and define for yourself, what sort of user experience you are trying to build, and critically review it.

Who would you say is your biggest competitor?

Excel Sheets.

How have you sustained your business? What are the revenue streams you rely on?

It was bootstrapped with the help of my personal savings. As of now we have received investment from CIIE, and few more investors have shown interest. We also have a monthly subscription fee.

Do you have any new features in the pipeline?

Yes, we do have, stay tuned we will keep you updated.

If not for Sosio, where would you be now?

Coding/Selling another unique web/mobile application, that would have come handy to people in their real lives.

What do you think is the future of such community management softwares?

You name anything, and you will see a community of people evolving around it. Be it a programming language, an open source project, a tech product, a social cause, or even alumni of a college. We are trying to simplify the management of these communities.

What one piece of advice would you give to soon to be startup founders?

Bootstrapping till you have sustainable revenue is a good enough way to start.
