We had the pleasure to talk to Himanshu Joshi, who shared some interesting details about the idea behind the company and what’s in store for the future, here is it for you:

Tell us how it all started – where did your vision for Guppit come from?

Immediately after doing our MBA, we were posted in senior roles in good companies. Puneet was looking into Business Development and Consulting while I was heading a particular new product line for corporate strategy. Sometime in April 2012 (that is when Admirch.com was registered), while browsing YouTube, I saw a pre-roll ad and this idea struck me and I developed a basic working prototype of the platform and started collecting my bookmarks in it. When I met Puneet sometime in July, we discussed the idea and then there was no looking back. We knew that the idea had potential because online advertisements are here to stay. Moreover, there are people who are driving immense traffic to the destination website, but what do they get in return apart from a few Facebook likes? We want to bridge this gap and are determined to do that.

How does it work?

Guppit.com helps you to monetize the links that you share over internet. By sharing the links with your friends, you earn money when someone visits the link. This is how it works:

1. A user submits a link to Guppit.com

2. Guppit converts the link to a url which can be monetized by Guppit.

3. The user shares the link.

4. People visit the link and the user who created the link gets paid per visit.

5. The user also gets paid for all the links that his referred user shares through the Referral scheme where another 5 Rupees is awarded for each recommendation that a user does for Guppit.

Once you achieve an earning level of Rs. 300/-, you are eligible for getting paid. Your cheque will be processed on the last working day of the month.

The world is gradually moving towards Smartphones and Tablets from traditional Desktops and Laptops. What are your thoughts on it?

We do have certain apps for browsers and we plan to develop a few for mobile platforms. We get nearly 30% of our traffic from mobile devices and it is a big number to ignore. We plan to come up with a mobile app that enables one click conversion and sharing within the next month.

How does Guppit stand out from the crowd? How different is your business model from the likes of bit.ly, which is also into link aggregation and monetizing traffic?

There are primarily two types of link sharing websites – URL shorteners and URL redirectors who provide similar service as we do. A URL shortener does not provide you any revenue for sharing the URL. It’s just your ease of posting short links for which you give them huge statistics and data around you. URL redirectors are essentially services similar to us. Our plus point against them is that WE ARE LEGITIMATE. Most of these services are fraud and are run just to earn quick money. We are not a site that can make you a millionaire overnight. We are able to provide some extra pocket money for a few more hangouts, outings in a month. Moreover, there is no player that is focussed towards India. India being a huge market needs a service that caters to the Indian audience, advertisers and Indian style of business model.

We are also providing a regular user a platform from where he can directly donate to people in need. He can share a part of his earning with the NGO of his choice.

Which segment of internet users have been your biggest benefactors? Can you share a case study?

If we have to tell you one category, it has to be the college going students. There are users who get Rs. 3000-4000 per month from their parents and live far away from their homes in hostels. Some of these users are now able to earn Rs. 2000-2500/- per month extra and that enables them to have a few more cool hangouts with their friends. Similarly, Facebook pages have benefited a lot. There are pages who drive huge traffic to various websites in the range of 2000-3000 page views per day. They do not get anything in return. We give them an opportunity to earn Rs. 200- 300 per day i.e. Rs. 6000-9000 per month from our platform.

Weeding out fraudulent clicks is a pain area for most digital ad networks. How do you tackle such malpractices?

With more than 5000 lines of code in our anti-spam engine, we believe we have cracked false visits to a very high level. There was a time when people were running automated bots, sharing links on ring websites, link exchange forums. We have built an in-house anti-spam engine that filters out most (>90%) of false visits. This has enabled us to achieve a better CTR and thus better ECPM.

Has Guppit got the feedback and growth you expected since launch?

The response has been immense from the target audience. We are now 7500+ users on our platform and show around 6000-7000 ad impressions per day. This calculates to around 200,000 ad impressions per month. We plan to achieve around 750,000 ad impressions in the next one month. We believe we should be able to do that. We have a product line coming up to cater to a B2B segment through mobile apps. The prototype is ready and we are working on market analysis now. We keep our fingers crossed.

Where do you think is the future of the Indian digital ad industry?

If you see the numbers, the total digital spend today is around Rs. 2940 Crores annually. Most of it goes towards search and display advertising. The trend that can be seen today is investment in mobile and social media space. Total market size in mobile and social media is around Rs. 670 Crores today but it is expected to grow exponentially. Heavy investments are being made in companies that target these markets. We believe we are in the right place at the right time.

What’s next on the radar for Guppit?

We are a company that believes in closed loop learning. We have learnt a lot of things in our journey so far and have implemented the same in our approaches and strategies. Hope to see the same in the future.
