The sun peeks through the slit from the curtains signalling a new dawn; the birds outside chirp and the empty road below slowly starts filling up with office goers. He sits hunched on a three legged stool, typing away on the laptop when the alarm goes off. He looks around the room in a daze, finally coming back to his sense.

“It’s morning already!” he mutters to himself as he walks towards the bathroom with the laptop in hand. Finishing his business there, he looks around the messy bedroom trying to locate his phone when the laptop ‘dings’ at him.

“Don’t be so jealous baby. I’m just looking for my phone” he says to the laptop finally spotting the tiny smart phone serving as a paper weight to a pile of sheets. He walks out of the room both his girlfriends in hand and settles on the only chair available on the table. Oblivious to the presence of other members in the room, he attends to the matters on the laptop and is buried there even after the breakfast served has been re-heated twice and lies cold again!

Absent mindedly he picks up his cup of coffee, not bothering to lift his eyes even once when the dreaded phone rings.

“Hello” he said into the phone without checking the caller id.

“Who’s this?”

“Who Munna? My name is Ravin”

“I’m sorry you have got the wrong number”

“No I don’t know any Dolly Masi.”

“I don’t have a Dolly Masi!”

“Ya ok bye.”

An hour and a lot of phone calls and emails later, he makes himself somewhat presentable for the meeting with the investors that kept him up all night again.

“Ravin! Why did you ignore Dolly Masi’s call?” His mother said in chaste Hindi.

“Who the hell is this Dolly Masi Ma! She wanted some Munna. We don’t know any Munna.”

“She was asking for you, you fool! Whole day all you can see is that phone and laptop. Bhagwan knows what work you keep doing. Come home early today. Dolly Masi is coming home with the girl’s family.”

“What girl? Whose girl? Another proposal ma? I’m so not doing this again!”

He walked away not waiting for his mother’s reply while the old lady keeps ranting in Hindi about her entrepreneur son!

15 coffees and a successful presentation made the day brighter for Ravin who not only bagged the deal but also created a good impression on the investors. Oblivious to his surroundings and the time, he started working again on his dream project- his beloved startup! The corner table of the nearby coffee shop that offered free Wi-fi to all and a free coffee every day to Ravin served as his makeshift office. From the owner to the waiters to the regulars all left that table empty for Ravin.

The sun set and the moon shimmered in the black night sky, his eyes stay put on the screen and his hands moved at a rapid speed typing away the business deal. A tap on the shoulder shook him from this stupor. Rajesh, the evening shift waiter, was used to watching Ravin get lost in the confines of his world.

“Sir, your mother called. It is 9 pm and she says you need to be home for something important.”

“Uhh what? Oh yeah!…Uhh..Thanks”

Ravin stood up from his work table and made way to the cash register, paid off his daily rent and walked away home, his mind still swimming with plans for tomorrow. Being the CEO it was his duty to make sure everything functioned efficiently. It was a different thing that he barely looked like one, his crumpled jeans and un ironed shirt made him look like a student struggling with a college project rather than a 25 year old CEO that was trying his best to create a successful online business.

An angry mother, an irritated father and a horde of random relatives dressed in blinding sequined clothes greeted Ravin before he could even fathom why he was home three hours earlier than his usual time. He slipped into his room before his mother even had the chance to grill him about his absence from the so-called very important meeting of his life.

He walked over to the bed changed into the clothes laid out for him and sprayed almost half a bottle of perfume and ran his fingers through his hair. His mother’s voice rang before he could even touch his laptop.

“You will not bring that wretched laptop out of your room for the next 2 hours!”

“TWO HOURS? Are you planning on getting us married right away?”

He walked out into the drawing room; a scowl on his face, patting the pockets of his trousers to make sure his smart phone is there for company. The loud banter and bright dresses had him dumbfounded for a moment. ‘So this is what it feels like to be around people. Damn how long has it been since I had even a minute long conversation with someone without having work on my mind?’

He sat on the sofa after a long session of overly loud greetings from the 10 or something relatives that graced every corner of his house. The pulling of cheeks and the rufflisng of hair went on for another ten minutes while his hands itched for his phone. He settled on the sofa, his hands reaching for the device. His mind engrossed in the phone while his mouth answered the dense questions shot at him. His eyes kept going to the big clock hanging on the wall. ‘Fifteen minutes since the torture started. How much longer? I better escape from this mad crowd.’

He stood up from the tiny place he occupied.

“Where are you going?” his mother asked

“A very important client is supposed to call any minute. I need to be ready and in solace for the call. Who knows he might offer me a very big deal.”

He scooted off to his room; locking the door in the process and threw himself in front of the laptop not even bothering to change out of his clothes. His mind churned and the ideas poured out in Powerpoint format. Time flew and his hands worked magically. His head dropped on the laptop and his eyes closed momentarily; a moment that lasted very long.

The incessant ringing of the alarm woke him up from sleep.

“It’s morning already!” he muttered to himself as he plugged the laptop in the charger and got ready to face another day!
