Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.

Steve Jobs

Endless hours in front of the PC, ten thousand interviews later, you are still running around the city looking for a decent job. You take pride in acquiring the self financing degree but then slave away at the internship they offer you in exchange for it. The usually renowned job portals spam your Inbox daily, offering you highly paid (the term highly referring to Rs. 1,00,000 per annum) jobs and not to forget the endless phone calls you receive usually beginning with “Are you looking for a job?” and ending with “It’s not a call centre Sir, it’s an MNC” Oh yeah, MNC’s we get you! And not to forget the lovely Facebook groups where half of them are sham companies and individuals, while the other half requires at least 3 to 4 years experience and STRICTLY NO freshers!

Where does the freshly graduated poor soul go? With no near-distant relatives or best friends working for big companies and absolutely no desire to waste their talents on making coffee for the senior, most opt the other way of further education (in which they hardly have any interest) or take up to promoting XYZ on Facebook and Twitter.

Knight in Shining Armour

Green Rootz, a media recruitment company, which has been a player in the field for the past six years, got inspired by the situation to give birth to GoMediaJobs.com, a dedicated job portal for the media and entertainment industry as a whole. Their basic motive since incorporation has been, “World is going digital, everything should be available at one click.” GoMediaJobs.com, is a niche portal dedicated to only the media and entertainment industry having a database of over 50,000 users which is growing at the rate of 1,000 every week.

Old habits die hard

We now have the option of buying anything and everything online but yet at the end of the day do we really trust these online stores? Adjusting to these new technologies will take us considerable time. The same hurdles were faced by GoMediaJobs.com that found it difficult to make companies adapt to the internet as a preferred medium of recruitment. go media Saga of Failure and Success

Amidst all this success, which company doesn’t have its challenges to face? They say what brings you down, is also what can bring you up. Harish Jain, Founder, said “In India we have great tech guys but very few product guys i.e. people who can translate a code into a consumer centric product. Our biggest challenge has been to put together a team which can make great consumer friendly products. As of today, we are happy to have built a great tech as well as product team.”

Moving past these hurdles, GoMediaJobs.com has received a tremendous response from job seekers as well as companies recruiting through them. According to their reports, over 500 companies have made use of the platform to recruit talent and around 50,000 visit the website monthly seeking career opportunities.

While a lot has been achieved by them, their next step to success is to create modules for people looking for freelance and project based work.

A valuable lesson

Mr. Jain’s valuable advice to our budding entrepreneurs, “Ice cream is not meant for those who wait too long for things to happen. If you have an idea, the time for you to make it happen is now! Don’t worry too much about failures, keep working in the right direction and success will follow.”

Looking for a job in the media industry is now one notch simpler. Sometimes we have to settle for something than nothing. Your dream job does not exist. You must create it, but to create it, first begin somewhere.

Next cubicle is an online job portal with a simple yet effective difference. Unlike other traditional and generic sites, it is a domain specific platform and is not based on general keyword search.

You go to a lot of portals where you upload your resumes. The job site then recommends you a thousand of jobs, which are often irrelevant to you. For a simpler and clutter-free hiring process, NextCubicle asks certain questions to candidates which describes their proficiency and based on that they shortlist the jobs with scores that is most preferable for the candidates. It’s like a person has to create a profile and NextCubicle suggests the right kind of jobs with scores.

The idea is similar for employers. Recruiters when look for candidates, spend a lot of time in the screening process. So NextCubicle tries to automate that and provides candidates with scores. It claims to simplify and automate the short listing process to boost productivity of recruiters and enhance career progression for job seekers.

Dhruv Patel, the man behind this startup shared some more information about this new tech-centred job portal, here it is for you:

What inspired you to start NextCubicle?

I was working with Zycus Infotech and they were into procurement. We used to hire people every weekend to increase the size of team members. At that point of time, I noticed that the entire process was very time consuming which even affected productivity and many times people even end up selecting the wrong candidates. For example, consider I’m a designing manager and I’m looking for a designer. I go to my HR recruiter and I tell her that I need an appropriate designer for my company. Although she doesn’t know the designing field very well, I’m still relying on her that she will go in the market, scan candidates and send me some relevant resumes which I have to go through again and cycle goes on. Recruiters support multiple openings from multiple departments and it becomes very difficult to understand every role in detail. Current keyword based search engines are insufficient to help recruiters to solve their real problem and we end up wasting our time and energy.

How does it differentiate from other online recruiting portals?

We have created a platform where recruiters can invite a manager to provide the requirement which is in the form of certain questions and answers which we are preparing. We already understand the domain and we tell the managers to tell us about their preferences. Our team of domain experts and recruitment specialists work on building intelligence to help you find Best Fit matches. Our Best Fit Scoring is a specialised matching engine that compares job requirements with the job seeker’s profile and with the help of domain intelligence and recruiter preferences, we generate a compatibility score.

How have you sustained your business?

We are a self-funded business as of now but we are looking forward to raising some funds.

What is the biggest hurdle you have faced or are still facing?

I think finding a co-founder has been a major challenge. To sustain your business, you need all pillars of your business to be strong. Being from a technical background, I still face certain problems and challenges in business development, sales and other stuffs. We keep meeting people and try to overcome all the hurdles.

Has NextCubicle got the feedback and growth you expected since launch?

Since the last one month, we’ve tried to reach people and we’ve got some valuable feedback where people have told us what challenges we might face and how we can scale up our business.

What more do you wish to include to take it to the next level?

We are trying to make it more personalized and communicate to the customers why we have developed such a platform. We have developed this platform to make the entire selection process a complete hassle-free experience. As of now, our platform is not open to everyone and we are supporting only a few roles.

What one piece of advice would you like to give to give to soon to be startup founders?

I have some imperative advice for technical people. It doesn’t matter if you are alone or you are working with a team, start thinking what you will need after 2 months. People are so engrossed in building the product that the sales aspect is often ignored. One should be clear with the strategies that will be followed once the product is ready. Make some 4-5 parallel tracks and try progressing each of them.

We hope Next Cubicle will let us heave a sigh of relief in the future and our inbox won’t be deluged by irrelevant job suggestions by traditional recruiting platforms. Here’s wishing them good luck and we hope they make their mark soon!

Do visit NextCubicle and let us know your views about them!
