Why climb the corporate ladder when you can build an elevator in your own building?

– Joshua E. Leyenhorst

The once very thin line difference between a business person and an entrepreneur has appeared to be more prominent with times when some intelligent minds have actually come up with new business ideas so as to how to proceed with a business. Yes, we are talking about the importance of proper technical training, research and consultation that play a key role in helping an individual to make a stronger ground in the field of business and the business foundation that has these important factors as its innovative business idea is Tationem.

Based in Bangalore, Tationem is the brainchild of Vijaykant Nadadur, the Founder & CEO, Aravind Kamath, the Co-Founder & Chief Technology Consultant and Senthil Kumar, Co-Founder & Chief Marketing Officer who have the sole aim to take business consultation and extensive corporate research and training to a whole new direction. The customized research and training provided by the experts develop the approach to facilitate the clients and customers with ‘what they exactly need’. We have been fortunate enough to have the Founder & CEO, Vijaykant Nadadur himself to share a few words with Startoholics about the grand journey that he along with his friends-cum-partners have come across and also about the company’s future prospects.

To anyone who’s never come across Tationem, how would you describe it?

We are tech training, consulting and a research company, focusing mainly in the niche areas of computer science such as Algorithms, Data Mining, Machine Learning, Statistical Modeling and Network Security. Our target has mainly been companies though of late we have started to focus on colleges too.

Tell us a bit about your background and the path that ultimately led you towards Tationem.

My friends-cum-partners (Aravind and Senthil) and I went to the same college during our undergraduate years. We all hold an engineering degree in Computer Science from a college called Sir MVIT, Bangalore. Following that we started to work for different companies and I moved to the US, for my higher studies. I studied at the University of Georgia followed by University of Kentucky, where my main area of research was based on Data Mining, Machine Learning, Algorithms and Bioinformatics.

In the mean time my partners had stints at various organizations such as HP, Texas Instruments, Dell and Sasken. I had just completed my employment contract at University of Kentucky and was set to move to Southern California for a full time position with a Bioinformatics major, last December. That’s when things changed. I called my friends (my current partners) to inform my decision with which they were unhappy and wanted me to move back and start something. In the turnout of events, I booked a one-way ticket to India. Call it gut or conviction, I knew this was the right decision, though many felt it was counter intuitive. Post my return, we explored various options and once we got this opportunity to conduct training for a large company, we decided this is what we wanted to do. In next two weeks, Tationem was born.

Has Tationem got the feedback and growth you expected since launch?

Oh Absolutely. Ever since we began, we have achieved better growth than what we anticipated, in terms of revenue. In terms of feedback too we have been well received. It’s only the entry that we have found challenging, the rest has been working out well.

What is the biggest hurdle you have faced or are still facing?

If you observe the trend, you will find that most entrepreneurs would have worked in India or abroad for a decade or two, before they jump into an entrepreneurial venture. For us, our lack of grey hair sometimes works against us. Though, we are being received fairly well now. Another hurdle we have been facing is the sceptical attitude of businesses in giving opportunity to startups. We work extra hard in convincing when we encounter such situations.

What is the hardest part about your job?

As startup guys, we have the privilege to call ourselves ‘CEO’, ‘CTO’, ‘CMO’ et al, as we can give ourselves any position we want, by the virtue that we started this company. However in reality, we need to play the office boy, the negotiator, the technocrat, the programmer, and at times party planner. We have a very young employee base. So, we have to be very patient in explaining the objectives, work etiquette to name a few. Keeping track of so many tasks does and playing so many rolls takes its toll and we end up working 6-7 days a week.

What is one mistake you’ve made, and what did you learn from it?

Well, we have made many mistakes and it’s been a constant learning ever since we began. However the one that strikes me the most is that in the beginning we did our level best to reach our prospective clients and once we did, we would focus on the next. It is natural to get carried away for startup guys. Then we realized that following up on client as well as our other tasks was more critical than chasing new clients. This has really helped each one of us to become more efficient in our approach.

Who inspires you?

There are quite a few people who inspire me. In the entrepreneurial line I’m inspired by Sam Walton (of Wal-Mart). His story from being a common man to building chain of retail stores that touches so many lives would probably an inspiration to any entrepreneur.

In terms of leadership, I’ve been deeply inspired a lot by Abraham Lincoln. His rise from an ordinary man to the 16th President of the US has been inspirations to millions of others well. It’s remarkable to see how as a leader, he stood his ground and went ahead with his conviction.

On a personal front, I draw inspiration from my parents who clearly are way ahead of their generation in terms of openness. And it would be difficult to leave out Pat Bale & Steve Bale, a couple I met in Lexington, KY, when I’m listing people who inspire me.

Do you have any new features in the pipeline? What more do you wish to include to take it to the next level?

Since our inception we have been focusing mainly on training and consulting for revenues. Last week some of our research seems to have shown potential. We would be working on two products and if everything goes as per our plan, we would have our first flagship product released by March 2014. This would certainly take us to the new level. Regardless of how this goes, we would stay focused on all our units with equal priority.

What one piece of advice would you like to share for the ‘soon-to-be’ startup founders?

The one single advice I would like to give the ‘to-be-soon’ startup founders is that follow your dream and don’t wait for too long in the search of right time. Now is the right time to get started.

A big Thanks to the man who not only has proven his credentials as a leader but also as a great partner. All the good wishes are with Tationem!

The sole limelight catcher in the field of corporate training and consulting business, Tationem is all set to come up with the best services possible to make a great difference in the realm of business. It is needless to say that these three musketeers are responsible for influencing a lot of people who aspire to be entrepreneurs. Cheers!
