As amazing as spending all day home sounds it’s equally daunting. I have had people consider me lucky because I get to be home, work as and when I wish and enjoy the day without having a boss standing on my head. But it is very difficult to concentrate on only work without being distracted by the many on goings in the house. The doorbell rings a hundred times, the landline phone calls, kids screaming in the building playground and the distraction from family members especially if they are your own kids! You just can’t ignore them. It is arduous to maintain your sanity if you are working from home with these distractions around.

Here are few tips to help you work among the hustle of daily life!

Time zones

Revisit those school memories when you made month long time tables before the approaching exams; it’s a different thing that you never followed them. Take a leaf out of old school and make a time schedule for your daily activities equally dividing office work and other duties. Choose the perfect time zone when the house is at peace and all your chores have been attended to. Scribble it on a stick note or make a memo on your phone; whatever you do better FOLLOW it!

That’s My Spot!

Go all Sheldon Cooper on your family members and declare your spot! Turn one secluded corner of your house into a makeshift office, one that resembles an office like cubicle. Do not sit with your laptop on the couch while the TV is blaring or the dining table while munching on evening snacks. You need not order the latest office equipment for that feel, one table and chair with a dash of silence is more than enough to begin work.

Suit Up!

Change out of those Santa print pajamas into something decent enough to pass off as casual clothes. I’m not asking you to be Barney Stinson and wear tailored suits even if you are working from home but at least look presentable enough to pass off as working! Your mind is conditioned to connect pajamas with sleep and rest, which plays major hindrance when one is working. Take a lovely refreshing shower, dress well and catch up with that schedule you made.

Man is a social animal

When working from home you miss out on interacting with colleagues and office mates that work close by. While social media platforms keep you updated with each one that personal touch is missing. To avoid going crazy there are a number of things you can take up. Join courses that specialize in your field, learn a foreign language, attend festivals and workshops and if you are the more creative type, help organize one of these. If you are working from home it doesn’t mean you should stay home all day!

Kill two birds with one stone

Majority coffee shops offer free Wi-Fi services and let you warm their seats for as long as you wish. Make use of this wonderful service and chalk out one such day where you leave that secluded make shift office and work from the local coffee store. The coffee shop ensures peace and calm (especially if you are usually working from home) while you work along with free Wi-Fi and coffee! What more does one need? 😉

Stay Active, Stay fit

Now once you have everything set from the schedule to an office space to clothes to outings marked, don’t glue yourself for hours in front of that computer. Squeeze in a half an hour break in your schedule besides the lunch and snacking hours. Make use of that half an hour to concentrate on your health, go out for a walk or run, do some stretches, loosen up your body and mind. Not only will this help you work better but it’s healthy in the long run.

Working from home is far more aggravating than sitting in an office from 9 to 5. It requires complete concentration of the body and mind and a very understanding family that gives you space when working.  Try these tips and let us know if it worked towards maintaining your sanity! Good luck! 🙂
