Beep..beep

A sleepy head lifted from the white fluffy pillow and squinted at the alarm clock.

“Oh shit! It’s 6:15”

Zoya sprinted out of the bed and dashed to the kitchen to start making breakfast. She moved around the kitchen with ease as she prepared a hearty breakfast fit for a king. She tiptoed back to her room, freshened up and quietly crept out. She found herself near her little brat’s bed and soon started the ordeal of extra five minutes of sleep. Finally what seemed after hours, her ten year old son reluctantly got out of the bed and made his way to the washroom. She looked around the messing room and immediately started tiding up and preparing her son for yet another day.

Zoya looked up from her cup of tea and gazed at Ayaan that gobbled his breakfast like no tomorrow. She glanced at the watch that flashed 6:50. She then picked up the empty plates and made her way to the kitchen.

“Come on Ayaan. It’s almost time for the bus. Here’s your Tiffin. Be a good boy today!” she said while handing him the tiffin and ruffling his hair.

“Mom, don’t touch my hair” he said in fake annoyance.

“Come on Drama King off you go!”

Zoya watched him enter the bus and made her way back home. A voice in the kitchen startled her.

“You’re up?”

“Good morning to you too darling wife. Your phone wouldn’t stop ringing.”

“Oh! I’m so sorry. Go take some rest. There’s still loads of time to get ready for work. I’ll start preparing for lunch till then. How does Panner masala sound today?”

“Sounds perfectly fine.” He said almost sleepily and walked back to his room.

Two hours later and Zoya looked back at her spic and span house before locking the door behind her. Not even three hours into the day and she was already dead tired on her feet.

Her heels clacked on the marble floor. Her walk oozed an air of confidence.  Head held high she stepped into her well lit spacious cabin. The laptop booted to life and a dozen mails were waiting in her Inbox. The day flew by as usual. Zoya found herself in the midst of meetings, presentations, clients, mails and before she could have a minute to herself there was more work piling on.

Work was tough being a new company and no partners to divide the workforce, but she was content with the rush of being busy. It was her dream after all. She looked around with a smile. Not many believed she was married and a mother and a muslim! Ah the stereotypes people had created.  She would always burst out laughing when people asked her about her husband’s reaction to her work life. Little did they know it was Zain that pushed her into chasing her dreams. If only the world had more men like him but alas she always found herself among people who disregarded her because she was a woman.

The day crawled by at its lazy pace and soon it was time to head home. She wrapped up all last minute work and headed to the meeting room for a quick word with her staff. Finally closing for the day, she made her way home making a quick stop at the market. Unlocking the front door, she was greeted by her favourite sight of father and son watching TV. She made a quick beeline for the kitchen and started preparing the night’s dinner.

As the clock ticked away, she fell in motion with the evening routine; cooking, cleaning, helping Ayaan with homework and all the chores. Finally Zoya found herself lounging on the sofa with her family enjoying quality time with them. She was lost in her own thoughts when the soft snoring of Ayaan brought her back to reality and she headed towards the bed to retire for the day. Tucking her son in, locking all doors and windows, checking the gas stove, geysers etc. once all of it was done; she crawled in bed and checked her alarm. Seven hours of sleep waited. And with that she drew close yet another day in her life.

Team Startoholics wishes a very Happy Women’s Day to all the wonderful women out there who manage their personal and professional lives beautifully! 🙂
